Kefir Mango Cilantro Lassi

Warmer weather ignites my desire for simple and vital smoothies. I am always experimenting to see what ingredients I can combine to create an easily digestible, nutrient rich experience of sensual pleasure. The kefir mango cilantro lassi is a new twist on an old favorite.

 

Collagen and kefir are full fledged animal products – so it is a departure from my normally vegan shakes. But I love experimenting with popular foods and supplements to see what works.

 

Of course, when using animal foods quality is of the utmost importance. Products made from organic, grassfed, pasture raised animals are the best. You can also make this shake with coconut kefir and hemp seeds for a vegan version.

 

I have been making my own kefir for a couple of years now. In general, conventional dairy products are not the best foods for most women and tend to contribute to weight gain, digestive issues, and hormonal imbalance.

 

But when milk is organic, grassfed, and raw, or at least unhomogenized, and has been cultured, it seems to have a beneficial effect on the whole system. I find it works well in my body. Kefir also has a much better probiotic profile than yogurt – many more beneficial strains.

 

Collagen is made from the cartilage of animals (I know, sounds pretty gross! But, if you eat jello, you are already there :)). It’s a protein full of many purported healing powers: it slows aging, heals joints, supports healthy skin, bones, connective tissue, brain function, sleep, flexibility, weight, and even helps with sleep.

 

Both kefir and collagen seem really easy to digest and very light on the system.

 

And then we have two favorites in the Indian tradition, cilantro and turmeric. Cilantro is full of nutrition and a great detoxer of heavy metals, and turmeric is a wonderful anti inflammatory food full of antioxidants.

 

You can find fresh turmeric root in the produce sections of some stores in the early spring – it looks a little like fresh ginger and is less bitter than it’s dried version.

 

Kefir Mango Cilantro Lassi
serves 2

Kefir lassi ingredients1 ripe champagne mango, or other type, peeled and chunked
1/2 -1 cup kefir – dairy or coconut
4 T collagen powder, or 4-6 T hulled hemp seeds
1/2 – 1 cup cilantro, loosely packed
1 inch fresh turmeric root, or 1/2 tsp dried turmeric
1 cup filtered water, more if needed to make it your prefered consistency

Place everything in a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
